Jakov understood slowly. The rewards she had collected—they had not lined her pockets. She had given them to the same families. The wealthy paid to get their treasures back. The poor received the same money as aid. Aza simply… rerouted.
“We must build a new bridge,” said the mayor, “but the treasury is empty.” aza lukava
“Then we starve,” said the farmer.
He confronted her at dawn.
“No,” she said. “I borrowed from the blind and returned to the deaf. The rich never noticed their things were gone—only that they had to pay to get them back. The poor never knew who helped them. And the bridge?” She pointed. The miller, with his “found” gold-tipped staff, had already hired carpenters. Jakov understood slowly

The village debated for three days. In the end, they renamed the bridge: Lukavin Most — the Cunning One’s Bridge.
