We don't have an attention crisis. We have a depth crisis. Here is what we have traded without realizing it: the long arc of thought for the spike of the notification. We have swapped the quiet satisfaction of finishing a difficult book for the hollow dopamine of a comment that gets seventeen likes. And then, if you can, choose the harder thing
You cannot hack your way to a loving marriage. You cannot shortcut your way to a meaningful career. You cannot optimize your way to wisdom.
In its place is the illusion of knowledge. We read the headline. We scan the bullet points. We feel informed. But information without integration is just noise. Knowing that something happened is not the same as understanding why it matters, or how it connects to everything else you know.
