"I enrolled," he says. "Night classes. Mechanics certification. It's not journalism, but it's something. I didn't tell you 'cause I was scared I'd fail. And I didn't want you to see me fail again."

"I put it aside for him," she says. "For us. I thought if I just held on, he'd catch up."

Later, at the tire shop, Georgie complains to his father-in-law, Jim. "She keeps score of everything. Last night I breathed too loud and she put it on a list."

"It's what I gave up," she says. "For you. For us."

"You think I haven't given up things?" he says, voice rising. "I gave up being a kid, Mandy. I gave up my room, my freedom, my weekends. I'm working a job I hate to keep a roof over a family that looks at me like I'm the problem."

Jim, balancing a tire, doesn't look up. "Son, marriage isn't about keeping score. It's about realizing you're on the same team even when you're losing."
