The crew of Odysseus II were not explorers. They were midwives . Back on Earth, humanity faced a trilemma.
“Do you remember the first signal?” she asked.
The vivum spread like lichen. Within a month, it had covered the Atacama Desert—once the driest place on Earth—in a soft, glowing carpet of self-assembling machinery. Within a year, it had reached the Amazon. Within a decade, every continent had turned partly iridescent. helix3
The UN debated for seventy-two hours. Then they gave their answer. The Odysseus II returned to Earth in 2064. The crew landed in the Pacific Ocean, stepping out of the capsule onto a beach in what was once Chile. They did not wear suits. Their skin shimmered with blue veins and faint bioluminescence. Behind them, Helix3 had begun to move—slowly, inexorably, pulled by a gravitational wave they now generated with their own bodies.
The first mistake was breathing.
They called it . But the name was a misnomer.
