Leo’s ‘97 Honda Civic had two things that still worked perfectly: the cassette deck and the ache in his chest whenever he thought about her.

Leo’s thumb hovered over the download button. He didn’t need the MP3. He had the tape. But he hit ‘download’ anyway, watching the little circle spin. Not for the file—but because below the post, there was a link to her new number.

On impulse, he grabbed his phone and typed into a search bar he hadn’t visited in years:

The cassette was a mixtape from 2016, a relic even then. Side B, track three was the one. J Boog – Let’s Do It Again. The song was a slow, island-infused plea for a second chance, and for three perfect months, it had been the soundtrack to every late-night drive with Maya.

The first result was a sketchy-looking site with pop-up ads. But the second result made his heart stop. It was a blog post from three hours ago, titled: “Songs That Made Us – A Playlist by Maya Chen.”

As the song played for the hundredth time, he picked up his phone and started to dial. For once, the echo in his car felt less like an ache and more like a beginning.
