Lolcams | ~upd~

Lolcams (a portmanteau of "Laughing Out Loud" and "cameras") refers to a genre of live internet streaming, primarily active from approximately 2009 to 2016, in which broadcasters (often socially isolated or mentally vulnerable individuals) were encouraged or goaded by audiences to perform humiliating, erratic, or emotionally distressing acts for entertainment. The phenomenon is considered a precursor to modern trolling culture and a dark antecedent to the "reaction stream" and "drama" genres on platforms like Twitch and YouTube. Etymology and Origins The term emerged from the imageboard 4chan , specifically the "/b/" (random) board. It combines "lol" (laugh out loud) with "cam" (webcam). Early lolcams were not initially malicious; some were simple curiosity streams. However, the culture quickly shifted as anonymous users discovered they could manipulate streamers through chat functions, direct messages, and coordinated raids.
