Revisionist scholars also point out that Turner’s thesis served a political purpose at the time – justifying U.S. expansion and the closing of the frontier as a positive national narrative. By contrast, new Western history focuses on regional continuity, community, and the long-term presence of diverse peoples. Yet critics of the revisionists say they swing too far, neglecting the real economic opportunities and political ideals that the frontier did foster for some groups.
