It traces the path of photons, or rather, computational rays, from a virtual light source. These rays bounce off a metallic car hood, lose a fraction of their energy, shift their color to the metal's tint, then scatter onto a wet asphalt road, bounce again into a brick wall, and finally, exhausted and transformed, reach the virtual camera's sensor.
