Behind them, the forest came alive. The trees themselves seemed to move—because the family was in the branches, climbing, leaping, dropping down like spiders. Leo appeared from nowhere, dragging a wounded Caleb. "The Jeep!" Leo shouted. "I hotwired it!"

"It's a local shortcut, babe. Chill."

The sheriff nodded toward a missing persons bulletin board, layered with flyers yellowed by age. Hikers. Couples. College kids. All vanished along the same stretch of backroad. "Hollow Creek don't appear on any map," he said. "But it's always there. Waiting for a wrong turn."

Her window was open.

It tilted its head. And smiled .
