The story unfolds on two timelines. In 1945, ten-year-old Daniel is taken by his antiquarian father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books — a vast, secret library of lost works. Daniel’s investigation weaves through Barcelona’s Gothic streets, revealing a tragic love story from the 1920s-30s involving Julián Carax, his muse Penélope Aldaya, and the cruel fate that separated them. The villain, Inspector Fumero, is a brutal policeman who also loved Penélope and later destroyed Carax’s life and legacy.
