By tracing the occupation from domestic servitude to industrial specialization and finally to its current gig-economy precarity, we uncover how this profession embodies tensions between transparency and opacity, labor and spectacle, necessity and obsolescence. 1. Introduction: The Glass Frontier Since the widespread adoption of plate glass in the 17th century, humanity has pursued an aesthetic of transparency. Yet transparency requires maintenance.
